I'm Ricky Birkenstock.
I've spent my life fascinated by how people change. Mostly because I've had to do a fair bit of it myself. Coach, advisor, builder. Founder of Transform and Thrive.
What I thought success would feel like
For a long time, I believed a certain kind of success would deliver a certain kind of feeling. The money, the flash, the visible proof. Get there, and you'd finally feel safe. Respected. Free. Then I moved to Colorado and met people with more wealth than I'd ever imagined, living in ordinary homes and driving ordinary cars. What struck me wasn't what they owned. It was how they lived. Close relationships. Real peace. Time that belonged to them. I still love beautiful things. A great piece of jewelry, a car that makes me grin. Achievement still lights me up. I just stopped asking any of it to do a job it was never built for.
From working against to working for
I built a lot of my life on determination, defiance, and pressure. I knew how to find something to push against, and I was good at it. It got me through. It got me far. After one long, grinding day, a question landed in the shower and wouldn't leave: "I keep engineering something to work AGAINST. What if I found something to work FOR?" It didn't change everything overnight. It's still changing things. What it opened was the idea that drive could come from love, not only from proving. That I could want something without needing to escape something else.
Survivor. Explorer. Participant.
Surviving taught me strength. I know how to endure, adapt, and keep going when things get hard. Exploring showed me how much bigger life could be. New work, new places, new people, new ways of seeing. These days I'm learning to participate. To bring everything I've got to my life as it actually unfolds, without needing it to follow my plan. I haven't arrived anywhere final. I still catch myself reaching for the old fire. I just have more choices now.
Ambition and peace, in the same life
People sometimes assume that turning inward means giving up on ambition. Not for me. I still love to build, to win, and to get better at things. What I'm discovering is that ambition, love, devotion, play, mastery, and presence don't have to compete. They can live in the same life. I'm finding out what that looks like in mine.
I'm in it too
I'm not watching from the sidelines. I'm building companies, leading teams, making hard calls with real stakes, and working with my own coaches and advisors along the way. I'm a master coach in change psychology, and I'm still a practitioner in my own life. So when you bring me a decision, a team problem, or a question about who you're becoming, I'm answering from inside the arena, not outside it.
What I've learned the hard way
Surrender isn't giving up. It's stopping the fight with reality long enough to see what's true and what's next. Being capable doesn't mean never asking for help. Solitude helps. Isolation doesn't. Failure is data, not a verdict. I try to fail with style. Life unfolds conversation to conversation. The quality of my life tracks the quality of my relationships.
What I bring
Deep curiosity. Strong pattern recognition. A willingness to challenge the stories you've gotten comfortable with. And the humility to know my read isn't your truth.
I pay close attention to your words, your patterns, and what goes unsaid.
I notice
I'll name what doesn't add up, and I'll stay open to being wrong.
I challenge
I sit with what follows. You're free to disagree, rest, choose differently, or begin again.

Why relationship comes first
People have to be encountered, not categorized. Most of what changes people happens inside a relationship honest enough to hold it. That's why we start with real time together.
